Virginia Rugby Football Club vs. Quantico Rugby Football Club
1:50 PM, Saturday, April 4th, 2009
Quantico, VA

On a windy day at the Quantico Marine Base, Virginia won the first of its two games with a convincing 20-5 victory over the hosting Quantico Hooligans. The Virginia men had the wind at their back in the first half, and they quickly capitalized on their advantage. In the 2nd minute, Gary Larimer scored a try on a counter-attack of a Quantico clearance attempt. James Fealey's conversion gave Virginia an early 7-0 lead. Fealey extended the lead to 10-0 in the 9th minute with a 26 meter penalty.

Fly half Evan Davis caught both teams off guard in the 21st minute with a successful drop goal attempt from 20 meters out to put Virginia up 13-0. A few minutes before half-time, however, Quantico got on the board with a try scored after a Virginia dropped ball. The conversion attempt into the strong head wind was, predictably, unsuccessful and left the half-time score at 13-5.

Virginia's offense stagnated in the second half, with Quantico repeatedly taking advantage of the wind to send deep kicks into Virginia's defensive half. Despite the constant pressure, Virginia's defense held strong and did not allow Quantico any points in the half. In the 58th minute, Virginia was finally able to take advantage of a Quantico kick, with wing Ken Duvall scoring a try on a long counter-attack. Fealey's conversion brought the final score of the game to 20-5.

Quantico, VA

In their second match of the day, Virginia dominated George Mason University (GMU) on their way to a 57-7 victory. Center Johnny McNulty opened the scoring with two early tries in the 10th and 14th minutes. Fly half Evan Davis successfully converted both tries to give Virginia a 14-0 lead. Four minutes later, Davis extended the Virginia lead with an unconverted try scored on a quick tap penalty from 20 meters out.

Center Pete Alonzi scored his own pair of back-to-back tries in the 23rd and 27th minutes on two long runs through the GMU defense. Both tries were converted by Davis to bring the score to 33-0. Hooker Korey Kallstrom wrapped up the first half scoring with an unconverted try after some great passing through the Virginia hands.

Virginia opened the second half with some punishing defense, repeatedly pinning GMU in their own half. In the 55th minute, Virginia's efforts paid off when GMU fumbled the ball in their own try zone and lock Brian Carver dove on it for the try. Davis converted to extend the Virginia lead to 45-0. GMU finally got on the board in the 61st minute when they took advantage of a quick tap penalty improperly marked inside the Virginia 5-meter line. The conversion brought the score to 45-7.

In the 73rd minute, eight man Marc Breton and scrum half Todd Applebaum started a move from a scrum, eventually feeding flanker Tim Davis for the try. Three minutes later, McNulty set Davis up for another try. Davis' two tries brought the final score to 57-7.
